Kiwano, also known as "The Horned Melon" "The Blowfish Fruit" & "The Jelly Melon" is one of nature’s most striking fruits, covered in vivid orange skin studded with horn-like spines. Inside, its lime-green, jelly-like flesh glistens with edible seeds, carrying a flavour unlike any other, an intriguing mix of cucumber, banana and lemon/lime. Its texture is juicy and cooling, similar to passionfruit or pomegranate.

For centuries, Kiwano has been a vital food in Africa. Alongside the Gemsbok cucumber and Tsamma melon, it provided one of the few dependable sources of water during the dry season in the Kalahari Desert. In northern Zimbabwe, where it is known as gaka or gakachika, it is eaten as a refreshing snack or added to salads, embodying both nourishment and survival. When left to overripen, the fruit will naturally burst open, scattering its seeds as part of its cycle of renewal.

Beyond its vibrant flesh, even the peel is valued, eaten for its exceptional vitamin C and fibre content. Its high water content and mineral profile make it a deeply hydrating fruit, restoring energy to the body while supporting skin, vision and overall vitality.

Energetically, Kiwano resonates with the solar plexus and heart chakras, helping to stabilise emotions and replenish strength during times of dryness or challenge. It brings a sense of cool clarity and resilience, reminding us of the body’s ability to adapt and thrive.

This is fruit for balance and renewal.
