Banana Burro, sometimes called Orinoco or Bluggoe, is a squat, thick banana with a creamy, almost potato-like texture when ripe. Its flavour has depth sweet, slightly lemony, and earthy, making it incredibly satisfying and grounding. Unlike common dessert bananas, Burros grow slower and hold more density in both flavour and nutrition.
At The Fifth Orchard, Banana Burro is seen as a foundational fruit, one that strengthens the physical body while offering emotional stability. It’s ideal during times of rebuilding, whether after illness, travel, ceremony, or hard work.
Traditionally used across Central and South America as both food and medicine, Burro Bananas are cooked, eaten raw or given to children and elders for strength. These bananas are exchanged as offerings to the spirits, in return for the strength needed to get through transitional periods and recovery.
This is a fruit of structure, slow, strong and quietly reliable.
Please note - the burro bananas are organically grown which means sometimes they may have faint black marks on the skin. They are caused by the natural latex that collects on the skin as they grow. Please also note that you will usually receive green burro bananas (although sometimes they may be yellow). Please leave us a message during checkout if you require the burro bananas at a particular stage of ripeness.
